Safari + Beach Combination: The Kenya Bush & Beach Itinerary
The best Kenya holiday isn't a choice between safari or beach. It's both. After a fews days watching lions hunt across the Ol Pejeta plains, you take a beach chaser, enjoying some downtime on the Indian Ocean’s crisp white sand beaches. Whether you’re on a family safari, a group trip with friends or your long-awaited honeymoon a safari can be tiring and this combination is a great opportunity to decompress to the rhythm of waves and salt air. It's the perfect balance of adventureand rest, and it's exactly how 64% of Kenya travellers now book their holiday.
Here's how to do it, where to go, and why the combination is worth every penny.
Why Bush and Beach Works
There's a reason this combination has become the dominant booking pattern in 2026. It's not about seeing more. It's about rhythm.
A pure safari (five, six, maybe seven days of game drives) is phenomenal, but it's intense. Your senses are overloaded, you're vigilant. You're tracking animals, learning behaviours, photographing constantly. By day five or six, even the most dedicated safari enthusiasts are looking a little grey under the eyes and choosing a sleep in over a game drive.
On the other side of the coin, a stand alone beach holiday is relaxing, but after three days of lounging it can start to feel too soft and you find yourself looking for something more entertaining.
Bush and beach together solve this. You get the adrenaline and the spectacle of safari, then you get to rest and soak it all in. You're not bored on the beach because you've just come from something extraordinary. You're not exhausted by safari because you know you have beach time coming to decompress.
The rhythm is perfect and you leave Kenya fuller than if you'd done either alone.
Logistics: Getting from Bush to Beach
The practical question everyone asks: how do you get from Ol Pejeta to the coast?
Flying: The easiest option and the only one that makes sense if you’re traveling on to Zanzibar or the Seychelles. If you’re staying on the Kenyan coast, light aircrafts fly from Kamok and Nanyuki airstrips (we collect free of charge from either) to Nairobi Wilson airport, where you can connect with a flight to Diani (for the South Coast) or Malindi (North Coast) or Lamu (far North) and even to Zanzibar. *There are currently no direct flights from Nanyuki to the coast. If you’re going on to The Seychelles you’ll transfer by road from Wilson Airport to Jomo Kenyatta for an international flight to Mahe. NB. You’ll likely need an overnight in Mahe if you’re not staying on the main island.
Train: The train from Nairobi down to Mombasa is quite the spectacle. Always book first class, it’s really reasonably priced, and enjoy views of Tsavo and Voi on the way down. This is a slower and more adventurous way to travel for those who like to take their time. When you arrive in Mombasa you can take a taxi to your hotel on the Kenya coast.
Timing: Most people spend 3–4 nights at Ol Pejeta, then 3–4 nights on the beach. This split allows enough time for meaningful wildlife viewing without feeling rushed, and enough beach time to truly relax.
A note on driving from Nanyuki to the coast: it’s not something we’d recommend. The road from Mombasa to Nairobi is a main throughfair for trucks transitting from Mombasa port to Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. So it gets really busy and traffic can be aweful. It’s also really long! The drive from Nanyuki to Nairobi is around 4 to 5 hours, then a further 10 to 12 hours down to Mombasa. Our suggestion - take the train, or fly.
The Best Beaches to Pair with Ol Pejeta
East Africa’s coastline offers a huge range of options, from boutique lodges to five-star hotels and quaint homestays. We’ve spent years exploring the Indian Ocean on our doorstep, here are some of our favourites…
Diani Beach (Most Popular)
Our Suggestion: Waterlovers Beach Resort
Diani is 30km south of Mombasa. It's the most developed, most comfortable beach town. Excellent restaurants, water sports, snorkelling, a genuine sense of being "at a resort." An ideal spot if you’re looking for the white sand beaches of Zanzibar.
Best for: Families who want comfort and activities. Couples who want a mix of relaxation and exploration. First-time beach visitors. People who want the easiest transition from safari to beach.
Vibe: Lively, cosmopolitan, easy. You won't feel like you're roughing it.

Lamu Archipelago (Most Atmospheric)
Our Suggestion: Peponi Hotel
Lamu is a UNESCO World Heritage town — ancient coral stone architecture, no cars, donkeys as transport, strong coastal Swahili culture. Quiet beaches are nearby but the draw is the town itself: wandering narrow streets, eating fresh seafood, experiencing real coastal Kenya. Peponi Hotel is steeped in history in the heart of Shela with direct beach and village access.
Best for: Cultural travellers. Couples seeking romance and atmosphere. People who want to experience Kenya beyond wildlife. Photographers obsessed with light and architecture.
Vibe: Atmospheric, cultural, intimate. This is Kenya’s coast as it was centuries ago.

Seychelles (The Splurge)
Our Suggestion: Denis Private Island
The Seychelles is a three hour, direct flight from Nairobi. If you’re ready to splash out for something extra special then this is absolutely the beach add on you need to your safari. Expect high end properties, luxury service and style, pristine beaches and granite boulders.
Best for: Honeymooners. People celebrating something significant. Those for whom budget isn't a constraint.
Vibe: Cast away island, paradise, luxury.
