A Family Safari

4 nights / 5 days: Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages, Kenya

Families with young kids will love this trip and you can do it all in just a week! The kids can meet Baraka, a rescued blind black rhino, walk the river line with the rangers looking for hippos and be amazed by the scale and wonder of a herd of elephants surrounding the vehicle. Private accommodation and a private vehicle mean you can run your own show and not worry about disturbing other guests. You will also head out to Ngare Ndare forest reserve for the day to wander the forest walkway looking for elephants, monkeys and birdlife then dive into the crystal clear blue pools and swim in the waterfalls. Here’s what five days on safari with The Safari Cottages can look like for you and your family…

Itinerary in detail

Day One: you will meet your driver in Nairobi at your chosen hotel and be driven up to Ol Pejeta Conservancy. This is around five hours and takes you through busy towns, rural villages, forests and open farmland giving you a glimpse into daily life in Kenya. You’ll arrive at The Safari Cottages in time for lunch alfresco and an afternoon game drive before heading home to feed the kids (and put them to bed if they usually head to bed early) before you unwind beside the fire with a glass of wine and enjoy a meal under the African stars. Families with older children can stay out later, watch the sun set over the plains and then head back with a spotlight for a night drive and later dinner.

Day Two: Wake up with birds this morning and set off on your adventure to encounter lions, rhino, cheetah, elephants, giraffe more. Your guide will find a safe space to pull over for your picnic breakfast where you can watch the wildlife pass all around you whilst you tuck into fresh fruit, granola, baked goodies and a freshly brewed pot of Kenyan tea or coffee. You’ll take a slow game drive back to camp and then settle in for a rest in the heat of the midday sun and lunch alfresco. This afternoon your house manager will prepare fresh tea and coffee for you before you head out again for an afternoon game drive and a sundowner on the plains; those with younger kids can return earlier and enjoy the sunset in camp with babies snoozing peacefully.

Day Three: You’ll be woken early with a fresh, steaming cup of Kenyan coffee or tea delivered to your Safari Cottage and a delicious breakfast of hot food, baked goods and fresh fruit with Sonja’s famous homemade granola to get you going for the day. After a hearty breakfast you’ll head out on your adventure, looking out for wildlife on the way out of the conservancy. Your journey continues through nearby Nanyuki town and the surrounding farmland and villages, giving you an insightful glimpse into life in rural Kenya, before you arrive at Ngare Ndare’s canopy walkway in the late-morning; this is a 450m long bridge elegantly suspended through the trees and where you can wander at leisure looking out for elephants, bushbuck and colobus monkeys.

You’ll descend from the walkway back to the forest floor and be guided on foot to the pools. Ngare Ndare is centered around six beautiful waterfalls that are the perfect spot for a refreshing dip! After your swim in the falls you’ll have a picnic lunch then begin the journey home keeping an eye out wildlife as you pass through conservancy in the late afternoon.

Day Four: Today, as part of your morning game drive, you have the option to visit the Northern White Rhinos and meet the rhino caretakers to learn more about the incredible work they are doing to bring this species back from the brink of extinction. You can also meet Baraka; a rescued black rhino who loves children and loves a chin scratch! After an enchanting couple of hours with the rhinos and the rangers your guide will find a cosy spot in the bush for a picnic breakfast where you can watch the wildlife pass all around you whilst you tuck into fresh fruit, granola, baked goodies and a freshly brewed pot of Kenyan tea or coffee. You’ll back to camp for lunch and a rest (or take on the staff in a game of volleyball!) then head out after a cup of tea for an afternoon game drive and sundowner.

Day Five: Enjoy a sleep in this morning, if the kids will let you, and have a casual breakfast under the shade of the acacia trees where the chef will whip both hot and cold delights to fuel you for the day ahead. You’ll leave from The Safari Cottage around 9.30AM and make your way to the Ol Pejeta entrance gate where you will be met by a driver who will transfer you back to Nairobi. You can continue your journey here or book your departing flight out of Jomo Kenyatta Airport for any time after 9PM today. For those with later flights you can always head to Four Points hotel for a delicious dinner in their open air, penthouse grill before making use of the hotel shuttle service to travel the remaining ten minutes to the international airport for check in.
